Day 6: The foot "hills"
33 miles? The reason for question mark is because the odometer broke on Michael's bike, not a big deal. This could have happened when he lost the map out of his back pocket as he flew down a hill. Not too bright. We'll be alright though thanks to reviewing the route with Dave the night before as well as google maps. By the way thanks again to the Drahmann family (sorry about the spelling yesterday). This morning they provided us with a hearty breakfast of eggs, French toast, and bacon. It was so good and filling we didn't have to stop till lunch in Placerville. Which by the way we had In-n-out cheeseburgers and shakes mmm. The other cool part was that we met Kyle and Bonita. Kyle saw our bikes and knew we were doing the Western Express route because he has also made this trek. It sounded like some of the hardest days are still yet to come. We'll just have to keep truckin. We made it to Fairplay tonight and decided to camp at a local park, hopefully nobody will mind. For dinner we cooked for ourselves and had rice, beans, and fruit loops.
The biking today was very different from anything we've ever experienced. Mind you Tim's first ride over 60 miles was our 90 miler a few days ago. So although it may seem slow going, he and Michael beasted through the hills. The reason we say hills is because when we stopped in Somerset (all that's there is one store) we talked to a local named Ed. He said we were in for a treat once we get to the Sierra Nevadas because these are only the foothills. He also offered us a place to stay but we graciously declined. Tomorrow we plan on trying to make it past Ham's Station. Then the next day go over the top of this mountain or hill and be in Fallon by Tues afternoon to pick up our spare BOB axles. Ed didn't know if one of the roads would be open or not due to the snow. So I guess we'll find out.
We're guessing we probably won't have cell phone service where we're going tomorrow. So if we can't call home or post a blog we would like to wish both of our mothers, Karen Luginbill and Michele Wilkins a Happy Mother's Day! Thank you for all that you do. May you find comfort knowing that we are having a blast out here and wish we could be home to enjoy the day with you!
Sorry, no pictures today. We used our other cameras for some excellent shots and to save our batteries.

Thanks so much for keeping the blog updated. It is so much fun to read, and I feel like I'm right there with you!
ReplyDeleteLots of love and good luck tomorrow!
Meg
well "hills" is right. You traveled more like ~37 miles but you ascended very close to 3000 feet of elevation in the pricess. Keeping in mind that your route included ~1300 feet of descent, in order to get that 3000 feet back, you climbed up more like 4300 feet today. I am sure you are tired and hope you are getting sleep now.
ReplyDeleteCharge your batteries because Hwy 88 is beautiful, and you will want to take pics. One thing - on the descent to Nevada, you have to be careful because you can cook your brakes. From time to time take it easy on your brakes, and stopping entirely is not a bad idea. I forgot to ask if you had backup brake pads but I would not be surprised to read that you bought new brake pads in Carson City, NV.
Ride safe and enjoy. Keep the posts coming.
Happy Mom's day to your mothers as well!
Dave and Katherine (Matthew and Spencer are sleeping)
thanks so very much Dave & Katherine & family from Mike's mom & dad...very comforting to know there are good folks out there helping out the boys during the trek! Happy mothers day to all...John Luginbill

It was great to host fellow midwesterners. Matthew-4 and Spencer-2 enjoyed meeting new friends and they were sad to see you guys head out. Matthew even said he wanted to go with. Have a great time, keep safe, and enjoy.
